67,000 children were reported as missing in Canada last year. While it is
important for Child Find to be able to assist families and the police when a child goes
missing, it is not enough. At Child Find we believe that "a missing child is everyone's
responsibility". The goal of our education program is to provide information on child
personal safety to reduce the number of children who go missing and who are exploited.
The educational material in our program provides information for parents, children,
educators, and communities on the promotion of child safety and the elimination of risk
factors surrounding abduction, both parental and stranger, and to reduce the incidence
of runaways through education and early intervention.
The education program is delivered from the office with the assistance of volunteers and
the police throughout the province. However, the demand for our education programs and
information displays has created the need for a full-time Education Officer.
Child Find Nova Scotia provides safety education and fingerprinting clinics to thousands
of Nova Scotia children each year. In addition to teaching these children about child
safety, the education program also works to create awareness of the issues of child
safety to children, families and communities. Child Find Nova Scotia is making an
impact with the Education program in this area. The demand for services is constant and
one that is steadily increasing. Presentations made in the past have been met with
requests to return again and the reputation of the organization and the programs creates
requests for new clinics and programs to be presented on a daily basis.
Child Find Nova Scotia provides all programs at no cost to schools, children's groups
and organization throughout the province. Maintaining donations, the support that we
receive from community and corporate sponsorship allows us to continue to:
- Promote the education and safety of all children
- Work towards the elimination of risk factors for abduction, both parental and
stranger.
- Reduce the incidence of runaways through education and early intervention.
- Expand the services of Child Find to meet identified needs within the communities
of Nova Scotia.
Child Find's education program is currently delivered in a number of contexts
across the province through:
- Fingerprinting Clinics and All About Me ID programs.
- Information booths in malls, schools, community clubs, hospitals, and community
festivals.
- Providing Conferences and training workshops for our volunteers.
- Providing a library of resource material (audio, visual, printed) for the
community.
- Mailings to assist with School, University and College projects.
- Providing speakers for childrens' groups, parents, professionals, businesses, clubs
and schools.
- Attending conferences and workshops to further knowledge within the field.
